Call Routing to Media Gateway
If we paraphrase the term “Media Gateway Controller (MGC)” then we get two things: Media Gateway and Controller. So a MGC basically controls Media Gateway. Here, an MGC is the instructor or Boss and Media Gateway is the servant. And these boss and servant need to talk with each other in a standard way to connect a call. This standard way of talking between a MGC and a media gateway is called protocol. A MGC talks with media gateway by a soft switch installed on MGC server.
Let’s make clear the term “protocol”. We can communicate with each other by our appearance, gesture, speaking, listening and realizing. Like that, two electronic devices can also communicate with each other by following some rules written by network engineers. These rules are called communication protocol.
As a MGC and a Media Gateway are two electronic devices, they can communicate by following those communication protocols. There are 3 protocols by which a MGC and a MG can communicate with each other. These are H.323, SIP and MGCP.
